2017 Fitness Trends
The most popular New Year’s Resolutions among Americans are to eat right and lose weight. If you’re struggling to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the new year, consider the top fitness trends of 2017 for inspiration! The American College of Sports Medicine surveyed 1,801 fitness professionals for their annual report; we list some of the highlights from the study.
1. Wearable Technology
Wear it to work it! When it’s time to move and get your heart pumping, your fitness tracker will tell you. If you’re not getting enough sleep at night, your smartwatch will let you know. Wearable technology has been popular for the last several years and was a top holiday gift in 2016. Brands like Apple, Fitbit and Garmin will not let you give up on your New Year’s Resolution this year!
2. No Equipment Needed
In 2017, fitness professionals encourage you to use what you have available to get in workouts each week. That could be dumbbells, resistance bands or – your own body weight. Body weight training sounds intimidating, but includes some of the most basic moves we know: push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges and planks, to name a few. Combined with regular cardio workouts, body weight training can help you lose fat and tone up your muscles.
3. HIIT and Circuit Training
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves short bursts of intense exercise followed by short periods of rest. For example, 45 seconds of jumping jacks and 10 seconds of rest, 45 seconds of burpees and 10 seconds of rest. HIIT burns calories and keeps your metabolism boosted for hours. For those who are intimidated by intense bursts of exercise, circuit training rotates different routines for 10 or 20 minutes at a time. So, you could be doing two minutes of five different exercises, followed by a rest period.
4. Strength Training
Women no longer have to be worried about bulking up from weight lifting! This misconception, for women and men, has been cast aside in favor of the many benefits of strength training. Studies show a link between weight lifting and living a longer life, alleviated back pain and a reduced risk of developing diabetes.
5. Group Fitness
One of the most fun fitness trends of 2017 is training as a group.
